The City of Moose Jaw is pleased to announce a partnership with the Holy Trinity Catholic School Division to host a city-wide National Indigenous People’s Day (NIPD) event on June 21, 2024, at the Moose Jaw Events Centre.

“This NIPD event is an important step in the City of Moose Jaw’s Truth and Reconciliation journey,” said Clive Tolley, Mayor. “We look forward to celebrating our Indigenous culture in such an exciting and inclusive way.”

The day will feature multiple Indigenous presenters from Treaty 4 and area who will take the stage and share their gift or story. Guests will be able to enter and exit the arena throughout the day, and all schools in Moose Jaw have been invited.

“Each year on summer solstice (June 21st), Canada comes together to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day to learn from the diverse and distinct traditions and cultures of the Nêhiyawak (Cree), Anihšināpēk (Saulteaux), and Dakota, Lakota, and Nakoda, and the Metis,” said Vivian Gauvin, Coordinator of Student Services for Holy Trinity Catholic School Division.

“It’s an opportunity for our city to listen and learn more about the Treaty 4 lands that we live on. Holy Trinity Catholic Schools are looking forward to a collective voice as we help build (y)our understanding of reconciliation in Moose Jaw.”

This event will display various forms of Indigenous teachings, storytelling, and dancing. It will run in a come-and-go style, and will be open to the public for free, thanks to local sponsors including the title sponsor Moose Jaw Co-op.

“Moose Jaw Co-op is deeply committed to honoring and celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day,” said Geoff Anderson, Chief Executive Officer for the Moose Jaw Co-op. “We recognize the importance of acknowledging the harms and mistakes of the past and respecting the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Indigenous peoples across Canada. Our Co-op takes pride in actively participating in this significant initiative, reflecting our ongoing commitment to fostering equal partnerships with Indigenous nations.”

The NIPD event is open to everyone, and attendees will have access to seats within the hockey arena bowl and concessions will be open.
