FAMILY DAY WEEKEND AT BUFFALO POUND

  • Buffalo Pound Provincial Park Parkview, SK, S0H 4C0 Canada (map)

The fun never stops this upcoming Family Day Weekend (Feb. 17-19)! We have exciting interpretive programming and crafts at Buffalo Pound Provincial Park all weekend.

February 17

Snowshoe through the Past from 3:30 – 5 p.m.:
Step back in time on this guided snowshoe to the Nicolle Homestead. Stories of blizzards, family fun and settler life come to life at this historic stone home nestled in the valley. Pick up your snowshoes at the Visitor Centre (former Ski Chalet) and follow us on the 15-minute drive to the homestead. Enjoy this 3.1-kilometre easy snowshoe.

Snowy Safari Snowshoe from 1 – 2:30 p.m.:
Discover the wild at Buffalo Pound! With snowshoes strapped on and a handy pair of binoculars around your neck, a Park Interpreter will lead you through the snow-covered valley of Buffalo Pound in search of the wildlife that calls the park home. Follow tracks and look for signs that animals are nearby. Who knows what you will find? Enjoy this 2-kilometre moderate snowshoe.

February 18

Crafty Corner: Homestead in a Jar from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.:
Imagine the realities of homesteading on the prairies as you design your own snowy homestead scene in a jar, then hear stories of settlement in the Buffalo Pound area, including how blizzards were braved, and livestock was saved during the harsh prairie winters.

* SIGNATURE EXPERIENCE * Snowshoe to the Past Excursion from 2-5 p.m.:
If you're looking for an adventure, join us on the extended edition of Snowshoe to the Past! Take in the stunning views of the marshlands, frosted and snow-covered woods, and serene homestead. You'll even get to warm up by a crackling fire along the way. This unforgettable experience is approximately 7 kilometres of snowshoeing and starts at the Visitor Centre where you’ll pick up snowshoes, followed by a short drive to the trailnead.

February 19

Crafty Corner: Snowy Owl Pinecones from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.:
Discover where animals go in winter and why as you make your own snowy owl pinecone craft to take home. During the winter months, some animals head south to warmer climates, some stay active all year, and some hibernate. For animals who spend their summer in the Arctic Circle, like the snowy owl, Saskatchewan is a warm winter haven.
