The History of Moose Jaw's Women Through Murals

With Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day right around the corner, I thought I’d share a little bit about the murals that depict the stories of Moose Jaw’s women!

  • Sunday School, 60 Hochelaga St. W. this mural pays tribute to Eva Hasell and Winifred Tricehurst who were missionaries in the area during the 1920s.

  • The Lady and The Cow, 602 Main St. N. (West Wall), this mural depicts pioneer Elizabeth Elliot and her cow. For Saskatchewan’s hardworking pioneer women, the cow was a prized possession and was treasured for the difference that they could make to a family.

  • The Sisters of Sion, 1236 3rd Avenue N.W. (North Wall), this mural depicts the Sister of Sion who moved to Moose Jaw and created the first convent for girls in the region. They also taught generations of Moose Jaw’s elementary and high school girls.

  • For The Veterans, 32 Manitoba St. W. (West Wall), this mural is a tribute to all of Moose Jaw’s veterans and features a female nurse, along with a sailor, an infantryman, and an airman.

  • March to the Pipes Forever, 500 1st Avenue N.W. (North Wall), this mural pays tribute to the Springs O’Heather All Girls Pipe Band and the Heather Highland Dancers

  • The Jewels and the Royals, 145 Ross St. E. (East Wall), a tribute to Moose Jaw’s excellent women’s baseball teams during the 1930s, 40s, and 50s.

  • Tribute to the Victoria School, 175 1st Avenue N.E. (North Wall), this mural provides a look at Moose Jaw’s Victoria School and a teacher who taught generations of children there, Faye Baker.

  • Dancing on River Street and Tribute to the Age of Theatre, 21 Fairford St. E. (North & West Walls), these murals show a more glamorous side of the women of Moose Jaw. Both feature flappers dancing with their cares away with dapper gentlemen in Downtown Moose Jaw in the 1920s.

If you’re looking for something to do in Moose Jaw this March (or the rest of the year for that matter) I recommend checking out the murals that

One Foodie's Guide to Notoriously Great Food in Moose Jaw - Part 1

By Jacki L’Heureux-Mason

When the thermometer dips, and the frost settles into the air, there’s one thing I look forward to more than anything – cozy nights out with friends, finding the best food our little city has to offer.

A fun night out with friends, focused on food and maybe the occasional cocktail or local beer, is the best way to spend a cold winter evening. Whether you’re searching for ambiance, a killer craft cocktail or the best sharing plates in town, Moose Jaw has an amazing variety of local options!

Appies for Days

If a bunch of appetizers coming out of the kitchen and filling your table with cheesy, bready, crunchy goodness is your idea of fun, here are my top picks:

The Mad Greek – It doesn’t get more Greek than this! The spanakopita, Greek boneless ribs and Greek Salad are all my favourites, so don’t make me choose! You won’t regret adding some Greek Fries (and an extra tzatziki sauce) to share! If food is love, then this place will make your heart full! (925 Main St N)

Cask 82 – For a chill and vibey place to hang out, you have to visit Cask 82. From the best Old Fashioned in town to an awesome local beer list, you’re going to love sharing some appies here. My favourites are the Crab Rangoons, Vegas Fries (with blue cheese or feta) and the crispy mashed potatoes. For added points, try the Mediterranean Chicken!! Live music is usually happening on the weekends, so don’t miss it! (82 Manitoba St W)

Bugsy’s Irish Pub – From the biggest variety of poutines that I’ve seen, to all your pub favourites, you don’t want to miss out on trying out this spot! The Irish Spring Rolls are awesome, and they make some of the best Salt & Pepper wings I’ve ever had! A great craft beer selection and awesome Caesars make this a fun place to start and/or end a night! (1734 Main St N)

Rosie’s on River – With an outstanding atmosphere and delicious food, this place is a winner. My picks are the Coconut Shrimp, Bacon Wrapped Tots and the best Sweet Potato Fries ever! The sangria is perfection, and the Saskatchewan beer selection is terrific! (11C River St W)

Bobby’s Old World Tavern – If you like a party, this is the place to be! Kicked up Celtic energy is everywhere, and the food won’t disappoint! My choice is going to be the Salt n Malts, Beer Battered Mushrooms and the Irish Nachos. Now I’m drooling. Add a pint of Guinness or Moosehead, and you’re ready to do some serious dancing! (63B High ST E)

Street’s Steak House & Bar – Great atmosphere and awesome food, that’s no bull! You will definitely find some great beefy appies here! My hands down favourites are the Smoked Bourbon Brisket Sliders, Smoked Brisket Poutine and the SSB Lettuce Wraps. Honestly, now I have to plan a night out with my friends!  (857 Thatcher Dr E)

Next time, I’ll tell you all about the best places to hit up and dishes to try for supper date night!

Supper In A Small Town

Moose Jaw is known as a tourist destination, but what a lot of people don’t know is that it is a great base for exploring the surrounding area!  Maybe it’s a weekend camping in Buffalo Pound, or it’s a trip to hike up Castle Butte in the Big Muddy Badlands.  This blog, however, is about my trip to a little restaurant in Lafleche called Trigo Food and Drink.

Now Trigo isn’t your regular run of the mill small town diner – it is an upscale, by reservation only restaurant that specializes in culinary and ethnic themed tasting menus that change a few times a year.  If you are unfamiliar with how a tasting menu works, its simple.  It’s a flat rate per person (plus any beverages and gratuity) and everyone not only at your table, but in the restaurant, receives the same dishes, in the same order, to eat and enjoy.

Currently they are offering a nine course – yes you read that correctly – Nordic Tasting Menu. As soon as I saw their social media post about this seasons’ theme my Norwegian heritage came out and said, ‘Girl you gotta go do this!’ And let me tell you I have no regrets, except for maybe wearing tight pants to dinner (Uff da!).

From the welcoming and incredibly informed serving staff to the amazingly curated dishes the Chef selected and prepared for this menu, everything exceeded my expectations.  From the amuse bouche of little Barley Pancakes with Soured Onions to dessert of Mosbromlefse with Dark Berry Fruit Cordial, every single course was a palate pleaser. From sweet to salty to savoury to sour, every single one of my taste buds got a workout. I understand that not everyone will fully enjoy and devour every dish; believe me I know. I am not a fan of beets and was skeptical about the Finnish Beetroot Salad – but let me tell you - I ate it all.

During our dinner we never once felt rushed to finish our courses. Be prepared to be there 2 – 3 hours to give yourself the opportunity to enjoy each morsel. Another great part of the night was that every time a new course came out, we were given a history about the dish and how it is prepared. And when we couldn’t finish all our food, because well, nine courses (and I made the mistake of eating breakfast) they offered us take out containers. To me this just wasn’t dinner, this was an experience that has me eagerly awaiting their next menu as I know it will be worth the drive.

Trigo Food and Drink is by reservation only, Friday and Saturday evenings.

The Nordic Menu is available until December 31, 2023.

A (Senior) Girls Weekend in Moose Jaw

Day 1

What better location for a girl’s trip than Canada’s Most Notorious City – Moose Jaw. Grab a couple of friends and come on down or be a visitor in our own city. We have much to offer for seniors. Loads of activities to do in Moose Jaw for a fun-packed getaway. We have a variety of top notch hotels and lodging facilities. Arriving early before check in? How about a quick coffee at The Hive to plan your day. The Temple Gardens Mineral Spa is always a great place and location to stay. You can just park & walk to take in the sights and then do some shopping downtown. You can soak in the soothing mineral water at any time during your stay at the spa. For lunch check out the restaurant at the Grant Hall Hotel. The original architecture in their lobby and dining room are a must see! Following lunch stop by Prairie Bee Meadery located on the lower floor & sample their many flavours of honey wine. Next check out the escape rooms at Little Chicago Entertainment. You and your friends only have 60 minutes to find the clues, solve the puzzles and escape. Way too much fun with a ton of  laughs along the way. They also have a board game cafe, axe throwing, and they serve cocktails and coffee!

How about just some shopping in Moose Jaw’s beautiful downtown on your way back to the hotel? For the quilters check out Quilter’s Haven located on Main Street. Then experience Past Times – a  store with a great variety of giftware and Post Horizon Booksellers for the avid reader. If you’re in need of a new outfit or two, check out Cranberry Collective Boutique or Cranberry ConsignmentJillian’s Design Elements has great stuff to decorate or remodel your home. When it’s dinner time, head back to the hotel and enjoy fine dining at Harwood’s Dining Room. Then you can finish the night with a soak in the mineral water pool!

Day 2

If you’d like a light breakfast or quick coffee to start your day, Evolve Coffee Roasters won’t disappoint. Meanwhile, book a massage, pedicure or manicure at Sahara Spa. And you’ve still more places to take in before lunch! With all that walking you’ll want to check out Gemmell’s Shoes with a wide selection of dress shoes, boots, and runners for every occasion. A stop at The Perfect Find located downtown has beautifully made gifts for every season. At lunchtime check out the artwork and giftware at the Yvette Moore Gallery and have lunch at the Gallery Cafe. After enjoying your spa treatment stop over at Lions Creek for a free tasting and sharing of many fine recipes. If you have time, stop by the Western Development Museum and check out the many antique vehicles and ways of transportation and of course, the gift shop.

For dinner I suggest Hopkins Dining Parlour for a unique dining experience–great menu and you may also experience the haunted aspect of this building. SPOOKY! Following dinner, why not try your luck at Casino Moose Jaw. That should bring an end to a couple of fun-filled days spent in Moose Jaw. End your trip by just relaxing in the spa waters before turning in for the night. These have been just a few suggestions of some of the fun things to do in Moose Jaw. Christmas in October

For many people, Christmas can’t come soon enough. That’s why here in Moose Jaw, we start celebrating extra early! Christmas in October is a local tradition that began in the character home of renowned artist Yvette Moore and has grown into an event that most of the businesses downtown participate in and many people look forward to all year! Starting Thursday, October 26th, Downtown Moose Jaw will be transformed into a Winter Wonderland with decorated trees sparkling in every window and Christmas cheer in the air! The fun will continue throughout the weekend, until Sunday.

To help you with your shopping and to add to the nostalgia of the Christmas Season, the Downtown Moose Jaw Association (https://downtownmoosejaw.ca/) has created a Christmas Wish Book that you can flip through to find your perfect present! Or you can give it to your loved ones to circle their Christmas wishes, like many of us did as children. Plus, if you start your shopping during Christmas in October, you’ll have more time to spend the actual holiday season as it’s meant to be spent, enjoying the company of your friends and family.

It doesn’t matter if you want to get a jump on your Christmas shopping, you want to enjoy some holiday treats, or you just want to marvel at the beautiful decorations, Christmas in October is a can’t miss event! If you need a little help while you’re in town, don’t forget to download the Tourism Moose Jaw App on the App or Google Play Stores!

Why You Should Go To A Moose Jaw Warriors Game!

Most sports fans have undoubtedly heard the phrase: “you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”—Wayne Gretzky.  One shot or opportunity you don't want to miss is the chance to experience a hockey  game in Moose Jaw!   Our community is rich in its sports history and the Moose Jaw Warrior’s Franchise sits atop of that category.

The Moose Jaw Warriors are a Major Junior Hockey Team who play in the Western Hockey League.  This league serves as a developmental league for young hockey players to improve their skills and hopefully get recognized by an NHL team. .

This hockey franchise has been in the city of Moose Jaw for 40 years and it is still  going strong.  In 1983, the team moved to Moose Jaw from Winnipeg.  They began playing in the 1983-84 season in the city.  The Warriors play out of The Moose Jaw Events Centre which is located in the downtown district.  It is a beautiful multi-purpose facility.   The WHL team moved to their new headquarters in 2011.

Why attend a Moose Jaw Warriors game you ask?   Major Junior Hockey is a staple in many Canadian Prairie Cities and Moose Jaw is no different.  Going to a WHL game in Moose Jaw is an all around “experience” rather than just a hockey game.

In addition to watching very fast paced hockey, you will also have the experience of interacting with like minded hockey fans, trying some great food at the concession and watching some fun intermission games that take place on the ice.  There are also raffle draws for player jerseys, and often fun giveaways a couple of times during the year.

Theme nights are also hosted by the team throughout the season.  Some examples of this are “Hockey Fights Cancer,” “Military Appreciation,” “Fan appreciation,” and “Rain Check”  night. There is always something exciting happening at the Rink.  There is a “Kids Zone” where youngsters can get the most out of their experience by playing a game of mini sticks, coloring, have fun with kids their age and enjoy treats like mini donuts and ice cream!

If you're lucky  you’ll catch a glimpse of our favorite mascot “Morty the Moose!”  He is always a fan favorite!  He loves to have his pictures taken with fans both young and old alike! A Moose Jaw Warrior game is definitely  fun for the whole family!  It can also be a great date night or even a fun evening for one!

  1. A Walk Through Wakamow Valley - No autumn trip to Moose Jaw is complete without a walk in the gorgeous Wakamow Valley! Spring is in the Air

Spring has arrived – despite what mother nature is thinking – and nothing says spring like flowers! A bunch of us girls joined Just a Girl In Her Garden for a flower arranging class to bring us into the gardening season.  Our amazing host/instructor Joey explained the variety of flowers and greens available to us as well as some tips and tricks for making a beautiful arrangement. We dove right in - choosing our own flowers to make into a custom arrangement. The assortment of flowers and colours gave us almost unlimited possibilities with our creations. As our arrangements took shape you could see each individuals personality come out in the flowers. Big and bright, clean and chic, neat and neutral – all stunning arrangements that matched their maker.

At Just a Girl in Her Garden (264 High St. W) you can soothe your soul by engaging in some retail therapy buy purchasing not only stunning plants and flowers but also beautifully curated selections of beauty products and home décor. Hot tip – with Mothers Day just around the corner you may want to order a custom bouquet now to ensure you receive it as I have no doubt these fine people will be swamped with orders.

Hanging with my Gnomies

As the holiday season approaches it is sometimes daunting to try and get your favorite group of people together for an evening out. But we did it! Six of us headed out to Starlight Handmade for a private paint night party. At first, I thought this would be like ‘Toddlers Gone Wild’ in the paint section of the local hardware store. I was wrong.

With a completed demo in front of us and a couple quick tips and tricks for starting our projects the paint soon started flying onto our stained wooden blanks. Everyone’s quirks and individuality soon emerged as the gnomes started to take shape. After about an hour and a half there were six unique gnome porch signs staring back at us. Okay – maybe not staring since you couldn’t see their eyes, but you get the idea.

Not only did we have a blast getting our creative groove on – we also got to shop. Christmas gifts (and treats for ourselves) were purchased without the chaos of your standard trip to the mall during the holiday season. With the amazing selection of locally sourced merchandise there is no doubt in my mind that you will find something for everyone on your list.

Be sure to head to https://shophandmademj.ca/ for full details about their retail operations and class/party schedule.
